Financial Times profiles Russian billionaire Yevtushenkov today

When Vladimir Yevtushenkov, the controllingshareholder in Sistema, theRussian conglomerate, is explaining his corporate strategy, he tries to ignore the phones ringing in his palatial office.

But then a phone sounds with a shrill tone quite different from the beeps and buzzes of rest, and he jumps up to answer it. It is his hotline to the Kremlin.

Sistema’s political ties go back to its origin in theearly 1990s when Mr Yevtushenkov was an engineer heading Moscow city’s Science and Engineering Committee under mayor Yuri Luzhkov.
