List of Australian billionaires grows as well

Of the 200 richest Australians, 55 are property developers, 25 are retailers and 18 made their fortune in financial services, BRW said. Twelve struck it rich in the mining industry.

Chief among those is 45-year-old Forrest, who jumped to fifth from 30th a year ago, as his wealth quadrupled to A$3.89 billion. Shares of Fortescue Metals, which is developing a $2 billion iron ore mine in Western Australia, surged almost five-fold last year.

The company was valued at A$9.7 billion at the close of trade yesterday — more than Zinifex Ltd., the world’s third-largest zinc producer — even though it’s yet to produce its first ounce of ore.

The richest debutant on the list was Clive Palmer, with an estimated wealth of A$1 billion.
