High-ranking Egyptian officials attended the funeral of the billionaire son-in-law of former president Gamel Abdel Nasser in Cairo on Monday despite his mysterious death amid reports he spied for Israel.

President Hosni Mubarak’s son and heir-apparent Gamal attended the ceremony in a Cairo suburb after Marwan, 63, fell from the balcony of his fifth-floor apartment in an upmarket district of London on Wednesday.

According to rumours circulating in Cairo, Marwan, who was alleged to have acted as a secret agent for Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency during the 1973 Arab-Israeli war, either committed suicide or was assassinated.
