Billionaire’s 27 floor mansion under threat

For a man who started life in a tiny Mumbai tenement, it could scarcely be a grander symbol of a life made good. Standing nearly 600 ft tall and on 27 floors, the planned new home of India’s richest man offers everything that a billionaire might need: indoor and outdoor swimming pools, three helipads, and sufficient parking for his huge family fleet of cars.

The prospect, however, of the business tycoon Mukesh Ambani building Mumbai’s answer to Trump Tower has not been greeted with universal delight among the rest of the city’s 18 million residents, most of whom are stuck in the same teeming tenements from which he has risen so spectacularly.

Now, after much debate over whether the tower is a monument to vulgarity or an inspirational icon of modern Indian entrepreneurialism, a spot of old-fashioned bureaucracy may stop it in its tracks.
