Thaksin wife arrested in Bangkok

Khunying Pojaman Shinawatra, the wife of Thailand’s deposed prime minister, Thaksin Shinawatra, was arrested yesterday on corruption charges as she stepped off a plane from Hong Kong.The former leader’s trusted confidante had signalled her intention to return and immigration police served the 51-year-old with an arrest warrant at Bangkok airport. Later she was released on 6m baht (£90,000) bail and ordered to appear at court later this month.

Thaksin, who is in self-imposed exile, charged with corruption over the land deal in question, said that he intended to return to Thailand to clear his name.

But the 58-year-old billionaire tycoon, who now owns Manchester City football club, said he would wait for the political dust to settle following the victory of the People Power Party in the election that was a repudiation of the coup
