Prodi’s Resignation May Herald Berlusconi’s Return

Prime Minister Romano Prodi’s resignation puts Silvio Berlusconi back in the driver’s seat of Italian politics, increasing the chances that the billionaire media tycoon will return to power for a third time in 14 years.Polls show Berlusconi, 71, the pro-business, pro-U.S. opposition leader, is the front-runner if Italy holds early elections. He is also in a position to limit the power of any interim government formed to replace the coalition that fell last night.

“Berlusconi is likely to be prime minister again within a few months,” said James Walston, a politics professor at Rome’s American University. “More than a decade has passed and yet nothing has changed.”

Prodi, 68, stepped down yesterday after losing a confidence vote in the Senate by 161 to 156. The loss came three days after the defection of the Udeur party, which had contributed three Senate seats to his governing coalition. President Giorgio Napolitano begins talks today with political leaders to see if they can agree on a new government to forestall early elections.
