Chuck Feeney is not your average billionaire. He doesn’t own a house or a car and, until recently, he always flew economy class.

The soft-spoken businessman, who was once ranked the 23rd richest man in America, wears a $15 watch and carries his papers in a plastic bag. When dining out he likes to order the cheapest wine on the menu.

“Money has an attraction for some people,” he once told The New York Times, “but nobody can wear two pairs of shoes at one time.”

Feeney, 76, an Irish-American from New Jersey who made his fortune in the duty free business, has become — in his quiet and unassuming way — one of the most generous philanthropists of all time.
