Former Yukos Billionaire On Hunger Strike

The cause of prisoners under Russia’s justice system has a new and perhaps unlikely champion. Mikhail Khodorkovsky, the former Yukos oil billionaire is going on a hunger strike to protest the denial of life-saving AIDS medication to his former lawyer Vasily Aleksanian by prison authorities.

Last week the Russian Supreme Court rejected an appeal to transfer Aleksanian to a civilian hospital to give him treatment, which his supporters say he will die without. This contravened an order from the European Court of Human Rights which has thrice called on Russian authorities to transfer him to a hospital where he can receive treatment.
