Deal for Dolphins a billionaire’s dream

February 23, 2008 12:36 pm

Stephen M. Ross agreed to pay $550 million for half of the Miami Dolphins, the team he rooted for as a young man. But that doesn’t mean he expects a full-bore, hands-on role any time soon.”I mean, other than playing quarterback …,” he deadpanned.

OK, so the 67-year-old real estate mogul who played football at Miami Beach High may not be the next Dan Marino. But Ross, also a part-time Palm Beach resident, is in place to shape the future of the franchise as much as Wayne Huizenga has since the early 1990s.

Huizenga, the team’s longtime owner, announced Friday that Ross, one of the richest men in America, has become a 50 percent owner of the team, Dolphin Stadium and surrounding developable land.

Huizenga will remain managing general partner, but Ross eventually will have the right to purchase controlling interest in the team. The total value of the team, stadium and adjacent property was set at $1.1 billion.

This has really been a dream of a lifetime for me,” Ross said.
