How one RRSP became a gold mine

Billionaire philanthropist Seymour Schulich, known best for his love of gold and huge donations to universities, has become a national treasure. So, it would seem, has his RRSP: It is about to become a gold mine of tax revenues, or charitable donations.

Because of his age, the 68-year-old co-founder of the fabulously successful Franco-Nevada Mining Corp. is about four years away from having to start drawing minimum amounts from what is undoubtedly Canada’s largest registered retirement savings plan.

Schulich refuses to discuss the size of his RRSP; that’s private. Yet, judging from a recent news snippet and sound investment practices, his fund is worth well more than a quarter-billion dollars.
